My closet(s) is a disaster. Where do I start.

OK, enough is enough. Right? You've decided to get your chaos in order and simplify your life. Obviously you've started by visiting this site. That's a good thing. The next best thing to do is simply contact us to discuss what your situation is and set up a time for an in-home consultation so we can measure up your space and discuss some design ideas. For a brief overview of the design and installation process, Go Here.

2)
I am building a new home. When do I need to call you?

Generally you would want to make contact with us as early on in the process as possible so we could advise you and your builder regarding layout of framing, door position, types of doors, etc. If you are already past the initial framing and into sheet rock and/or beyond, just give us a call and we will work with you to maximize the existing space. Most closet installations are designed around an already finished area, but if you have the ability to plan before framing does begin, you obviously have less constraints and total flexibility.

3)
Do you install children's closets?

Absolutely. Children really love to have their closets organized too. Depending on how young the children are often determines how the closet is put together. With proper design planning, a closet can be put assembled in such a way that it can grow and be modified over the years to adapt to a child's size and needs. Certain items such as small drawers, chrome baskets, plenty of shelving and even a hamper can make a real difference in a child's sense of organization and self esteem.

4)
Do I need to do all of my closets at the same time?

Of course not. It is entirely up to you, your budget and schedule. The cost of closet installations, like any remodeling project, can begin to add up rather quickly, especially when organizing a number of areas. Many times a homeowner will want to split up the closet installations into smaller projects as opposed to doing everything at once. In fact, we encourage this approach. Commonly, either the Master closet will be done separately from the children's closets, or other storage areas within the home. When the homeowner's timing and budget allow, we will then go back and complete the work as requested. This could easily be several weeks or as much as a year later. Whatever works for the homeowner works for us.

5)
What is the difference between a wall hung closet and a floor based one?

Essentially a wall hung (European style) unit uses a high tech bracket system to suspend the shelving system roughly 12" off the floor. A floor based system is built from the floor up and sets directly on the hardwood or carpeted floor. Rocky Mountain Closets Inc. can provide either system or a combination of both. However, unless you will be storing heavy objects such as books on the shelving or wish to have a large heavy bank of drawers, we recommend installing a wall hung unit. Generally they cost anywhere from 20-35% less because they use less overall material and basically create less clutter within the space. Additionally, with a wall hung system there are no issues with vacuuming or the exchanging of flooring material at a later date.

6)
What are your closets made of?

Standard, 3/4" x 14" wide industrial grade pine core particle board laminated with state of the art melamine available in a wide variety of colored finishes that are extremely durable and clean easily. Hardware is top quality tittering concealed Euro-hinges and 3/4 or full-extension drawer glides. Accessories such as valet poles, sliding belt & tie holders, jewelry drawer inserts, shelf dividers, slanted shoe shelves and hampers all add up to a very full line of options for you to choose from.

7)
Can you replace my existing sliding doors with bi fold doors?

In most cases yes. We understand that many homeowners have double sliding doors already on their existing reach-in closets and that they make for a very inefficient closet design. We can remove the existing sliders and replace them with bi fold doors for an additional fee. Painting and/or staining of these new doors however, cannot be done by us.

8)
How much do your closets cost? How do you price your work?

We are very competitively priced with our franchise competition. If fact we have always vowed to never lose a job solely based on price alone. Apples to apples, design vs. design, accessory to accessory, we know that we can match or beat most any quoted price. They way a price is determined is fairly straightforward. The total amount of material, parts, accessories and an estimated labor charge is entered into a formula and the job quote is totaled up. If the design changes, upgrades or accessories added on, the price slides up or down accordingly. For a little more info Go Here.

9)
Why should I not use a pre-packaged closet from the home store?

Several good reasons. One is that every closet is a different size, and because most of these types of boxed units only come in specific sizes, maximizing your space is highly unlikely. Generally they are of inferior quality because the components are only 1/2" or 5/8" thick which is just too fragile. The white surface finish is literally paper thin and will not hold up very well to either moisture or any type of abuse. Lastly, you have to weigh the time and effort that you will have to go through to measure, estimate, purchase and install a product that will not make use of the space very well. Bottom line, there's very good reasons why these types of closet solutions are so inexpensive.

10)
Do you do wire-type organizers?

No. Honestly we can't stand the wire systems. Many of our installations begin with removing brand new white wire systems in new homes. We usually let the homeowner save it for later use in another area of the home, or we donate it to Habitat for Humanity.

11)
What colors do your closets come in?

The standard closet comes in basic white which is the most economical. 80% of the entire custom closet industry installs simple white closets. Beyond that, for a slight upgrade you can have almond or on up to numerous melamine wood finishes which look amazingly realistic.

12)
Is there a price difference between white and other finishes?

Yes. White is the starting point for every estimate. Almond is 15% more than white and most of the wood melamine finishes are another 15% beyond that. Several of the wood finishes are as much as 40% above the basic white finish because they are special order and incur a significant up charge to cover the cost of shipping the material.

13)
Can I get drawers in my closet?

Certainly. As long as the design and dimensions of the closet will allow it, drawers are a great addition to your project. You can stack drawers 3, 4 or 5 units high. They come in a standard depth of 14" and either 5", 8" or 12" tall. Drawers come in widths of 18", 24" or 30".

14)
What are the names associated with different types of closets?

There are two very basic types of closet types. Walk-ins and reach-ins. Obviously a walk-in closet is one, such as in a master bedroom, that you can enter and move around in and might be as small as 48" x 48" or as large as a small bedroom. Most often this type of closet has a single, hinged door that closes and latches shut. A reach-in closet is usually only 24" deep and anywhere from 24" to 8' wide. Basically this type of closet you stand outside and reach in to place or remove items. Sometimes referred to as a wall closet. The reach-in closet can have many different types of doors and door combinations. More typically are a single or double swing-out hinged door(s), pocket doors, bi fold, or sliding doors.

15)
I want to go ahead with the project. When will it be done?

Generally the turnaround time for a basic closet installation is around 10 days. Certain upgrades like the addition of drawers will mean a 2 week lead time. Other factors such as upgraded wood finishes, custom doors, and adding to the overall size and complexity of the project will more than likely mean an install date 3-4 weeks out. Most importantly, we want to work around your schedule and time frame and will make every effort to accommodate your needs and wishes.

16)
How long does an installation take?

Most jobs will be completed within one day. The duration of any installation is all in direct relation to the size and complexity of the work to be done. Large, expensive jobs that involve a considerable amount of on site customization and craftsmanship could take several days to a number of weeks to complete. However, 90% of all the jobs we do can be completed in 1 to 2 days.

17)
What do I need to do in preparation for the installation day?

At a minimum you need to completely remove all your belongings from the closet(s) that will be getting redone. In addition, we request that the area directly outside of any closet be free of an clutter. Essentially we need at least a path to get to the closet and a little work space somewhere right near by where we can sort and prepare the closet components. We also recommend removing any pictures or hanging display items from any walls adjoining the closet. Occasionally during installation some slight hammering and tapping of the walls is necessary and removing these types of items ensures that they will not be accidentally jarred from the wall. Lastly, for liability reasons, we are not permitted to lift or move any furniture or household items whatsoever. Please make sure that any end tables, lamps, display items, etc., have been removed from the surrounding areas prior to our arriving. Thanks.

18)
Will you remove the old closet shelving?

Yes. Included in the overall price of the closet & installation is the removal of existing shelving, wire systems, etc. Typically removing such items can cause or reveal minor damage such as exposing nail holes which we will fill. If you have the paint that was originally used in the closet, we will gladly dab on some touch-up paint for you.

20)
Will you paint the walls before installing the new closet?

Unfortunately we cannot get involved with painting the entire closet out. The bottom line is that it can absolutely screw up the entire installation schedule. Often times colors won't match, paint won't dry properly, stains of all types can bleed through, and then we can find ourselves dealing with a completely separate painting contract issue that has nothing to do with a cabinet installation. We often times compare the situation to kitchen cabinet installers who wouldn't be expected to paint the kitchen before they install the cabinets. This is pretty much the same scenario. There are 3 options to painting the closet. One is do no painting at all. Another would be to paint after the installation is complete. Or lastly, get the area painted a day or more before the scheduled installation. What this would entail is either you or us removing the existing old closet components ahead of time. If you would like us to do it, we will gladly make time for it but will need to charge you a small additional fee to be there on a separate day.

20)
What terms do you usually give?

Your standard investment is a 50% deposit with the balance due on the day of installation. There is 2.5% discount available for paying in full up front. There is a standard written agreement that both parties endorse pertaining to the work that will be completed.

21)
What types of payment do you accept?

We will gladly accept personal or business checks, Visa, Master Card & American Express.

22)
Do I have to be home when the installation is done?

Yes, either you or someone that you entrust should be available to stay in your home for the duration of the installation. Questions and decisions might very well arise that need to be discussed with a person capable of making proper judgment calls. Unique and obscure circumstances, although infrequent, can and do arise. The most convenient thing is to simply schedule the installation when someone is available to br present.

Do you guarantee your work?

Absolutely. Rocky Mountain Closets Inc. backs up it's work with a Limited Lifetime Guarantee against product defects or failure for as long as you own your home. 25)
What makes you different than the franchised competition?

Price is probably #1. When you purchase from a franchised outfit, somewhere from 5-10% of the sales price gets passed on directly to the corporate office. Right up front you're paying for something other than the closet materials, your paying for a name brand. This is one of the main reasons we can under sell the franchises virtually every time. We're not a franchise and simply avoid these add-on fees. In many other areas we are able to keep our overhead low which further allows us to beat the big guns on price. Even though these outfits buy far much material than we do, and we all pretty much buy from the same suppliers, Rocky Mountain Closets Inc. can still provide you the same designs and materials for less.
